Enemies of the Imperium: Dark Eldar

Image from http://fatesofashe.com
Bear in mind the fact that I use the Chaos Space Marines Codex to represent an Astartes Legion, so most of the focus of this article will be in the CSM 'dex, but also with some bits for Loyalists (Blood Angels, I'm looking to you!).

This is a "new" threat for most of us, specially the most outdated armies. I'm not a WAAC player, -nor a "friendly" for that matter, I want my lists fully optimized but keeping the theme to the most- also bear in mind that this are my own impressions with the aim of crush the foul xenos everywhere

With all that Fast AV10 skimmer spam toting lances and poisoned guns, our trusted melta-list is not realiable anymore but we can't lose focus on the all-comer list. So how can deal with that menace? I'm sure that are many options out there, here is mine.

Core troops. You always trust on your cult troops like Plagues or Zerks, keep them. They're tough enough and are useful. Zerkers will remain as always but is time to think about the Plague Marines loadout:

7 PM with 2 Plasmagun, champ with Powerfist is just 231 points, not too far of the usual cost. Those blessed of Nurgle fear not the plasma thanks to their FNP, and thanks to the increased range can hurt transports & MCs. You can argue that the lack of melta hurts for an all-comers list, but there are other ways to get your loved meltas.

Following close those dudes are the never enough appreciated and loved CSM squads and the ol' sitter set-up: 10 CSM with Plasmagun and Autocannon. Add one champion with Power Fist to taste and you're fine.

Now you have lots of S7 shots, with some AT lack. And all of us love AT punch. Here are my -oh noes, heretic! infidel!- thoughts. Your AT rely on the Elites slot *hides under the table*

Looking at this guys we have not-so-awesome terminators, dreads and chosen.

That classic 4x terminator, 3x combi-melta, 1x Reaper Autocannon and 1x Chainfist is just about 175 points and enough versatile to deal with heavy armor and still unleashing S7 shots happily -if they survive.

Dreads are very unreliable, because some vestigial (and stupid) rule of the times with Psychology had something to do with 40k. And here comes the Multimelta Dread, backed by Heavy Flamer goodness. I don't advice to take that option because the randomness, but is always there.

And there are the Chosen. You can tool them with 4 plasmas and autocannon... But we're searching some AT power. Another sub-optimal unit appears! Add 4 meltas and a rhino (outflanking or whatever) and you're fine. People in the internet always advice of no mixing special weapons -right now I want to try 3x plasma + 2x melta chosen- and if you do, it is at your own risk.

Our Fast Attack is not the best of the world -thank you both Alessio & Thorpe- but we need to consider the Raptors and the Bikers, both expensive units, but both capable of carry 2 meltas and icon. They can't be your 1st insurance in meltaspam, but are always a 18" threat for any armor kicking around. A minimal Raptor squad with Icon of Chaos glory and dual melta can be useful -if you manage to get them in cover/out of LOS- for deep striking Terminators and create dangerous areas to armor.

Bikers are expensive as hell and have less utility than the loyalist counterparts and have a large signature for large blasts. In the good side, they have T4(5) and are relentless. Used wisely can take the same role of raptors (in this case, icon delivery with melta support). If I was to take them... something like 4-5 bikers, IoCG and 2x melta.

Then finally are the HS slot, 2x2 oblits always helps against almost everithing, but maybe we need some more transport-poping. If you feel that, take 7-8 havos with IoCG and 4 autocannons or one predator destructor with  havoc launcher and sponsons to taste (add demonic possession if you have points).

Feel free to comment and kill me, but remember that this article is just how I view the Dark Eldars (and more important, this blog is intended to be family friendly, so avoid offensive language/nerdrage!). If you want true competitive advice I'm sure that you can find some other places to get that.

Forget to add the Defiler, nice blast and comes with AC bare-bones! You can also add a Havoc Launcher for just 5 points and the loss of the heavy flamer.

Now, following that principles...

Khârn

8 strong zerker squad, champ with PF, rhino w/combi-melta.
10 strong CSM squad, champ with PF, icon of chaos, plasma & autocannon, rhino.
10 strong CSM squad, champ with PF, icon of chaos, plasma & autocannon, rhino.

4 strong chaos terminators, 3 combimelta, reaper autocannon, chainfist
4 strong chaos terminators, 3 combimelta, reaper autocannon, chainfist

5 strong raptors, 2 meltagun, icon of chaos

Predator destructor, demonic possession, heavy bolter sponsons, havoc launcher
7 strong havoc squad, icon of chaos, 4 autocannon

Total 1743

Maybe not the best list, but stick with the theme and still playable (or I hope so... because is close to be my next list).

HOWEVER... After a coffe, I want to add something more CSM and less WE:

Sorc, MoT, warptime, TDA

10 strong CSM squad, champ with PF, icon of chaos, plasma & autocannon, rhino.
10 strong CSM squad, champ with PF, icon of chaos, plasma & autocannon, rhino.
10 strong CSM squad, champ with PF, icon of chaos, plasma & autocannon, rhino.
10 strong CSM squad, champ with PF, icon of chaos, plasma & autocannon, rhino.

6 strong chaos terminators, 3 combimelta, reaper autocannon, chainfist, MoT

Predator destructor, demonic possession, heavy bolter sponsons, havoc launcher
Predator destructor, demonic possession, heavy bolter sponsons, havoc launcher

1750 sharp, 6 tanks, 7 terminators and 40 grunts.

A bit tailored, but can work against no av14 spam. Nothing is perfect in the warp!

Addendum:

To the Blood Angels Legion players...

All slots as always but:

HS: Consider dakkabaals and rifleman dreads.
FA: Landspeeder Typhoon.

Have fun!
